Part seafaring adventure, part island fair, the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo kicked off in record fashion Friday, thanks to calm seas and piqued interest. It was a banner day for the Mobile Jaycees’ signature event, with boats streaming through the rodeo headquarters on Dauphin Island for hours, unloading their entries into any one of 30 different inshore and offshore species categories.

No toxic algae along Alabama coast, monitoring underway; Mississippi beaches remain closed – al.com

The toxic algae that has shut down Mississippi’s beaches has not made its way to Alabama, water testing confirmed Tuesday. Amanda Ingram, Senior Epidemiologist at the Alabama Department of Public Health, said samples of water taken along the Alabama coast this week showed no “levels of concern” for harmful algae blooms, or HABs.

Toxic algae is moving along the Mississippi coast in our direction at a rapid rate. As of Wednesday, 19 Mississippi beaches are closed because of a toxic blue-green algae, a bloom typically found in fresh water. Some of the latest closures are in our neighboring Jackson County.

Study Tracks Manatee Migration along Gulf Coast

Those chubby, lovable icons of marine conservation, West Indian manatees (Trichechus manatus), are a lot less sedate than you’d think, according to a recently published study by researchers at Alabama’s Dauphin Island Sea Lab. Manatees are swifter than imagined, their numbers are growing, and they are as determined in their travel as the weekend stream on I-10.

A lot of people will remember Dr. John for his music. In Lower Alabama many will remember him for stepping up to help put Dauphin Island back on the map after the Deepwater Horizon disaster. In hindsight, it can be hard to remember just how great the fear was that the spring 2010 catastrophe would ruin Alabama's beaches and a whole way of life along with them. Right behind that was a second fear: That even if the damage wasn't total, concerns about the spill would keep visitors away and cause the region's tourism economy to collapse.

Dauphin Island residents race to repair storm damage | WPMI

Dauphin Island, Ala. (WPMI) — Crews were out on Monday making repairs to homes and businesses in Dauphin Island and the damage is still visible. “It punched a hole in the interior of the house and water came in. We were able to get it covered pretty quick with the help of neighbors friends and family,” said Dale Dority, a resident whose home was damaged during the storm. Dority is in cleanup mode after strong winds sent a tree crashing on top of his roof Sunday.
