Orange Beach to pay Island Fiber $350,000 to expand fiber

August 23, 2019 – Orange Beach, AL – (OBA®) – Residents being hooked up with fiber light-speed internet by homegrown Island Fiber are tickled with the results. “The internet is faster, more reliable,” Realtor Tucker Shaver said. “If we’ve got a question, we speak to someone locally who speaks mostly English and they are super helpful. If we’ve got questions and we’ve got problems we’re not calling a call center that’s confused. We’ve been thrilled with it so far.”

Orange Beach gets first fiber home service, more planned

August 5, 2019 – Orange Beach, AL – (OBA®) – Courtney Creel and her family of Orange Beach received residential light-speed internet service with full home Wi-Fi coverage. “It is wonderful,” Creel said. “We’ve had it for a couple of days and I am obsessed.” Thanks to Island Fiber and owner Mickey Franco fiber is bringing light-speed residential internet to individual homes in Orange Beach and the Creels were the first on Aug. 2. It’s the first free-standing home in the city to have fiber internet installed in their home courtesy of Island Fiber.

Orange Beach moves to regulate small-cell technology

When phone providers start coming to town looking to expand small-cell technology in Orange Beach the city wants to have an ordinance ready for them. “No carrier is just going to come in there and say I’m going to put the pole here because I have the right to do it because the FCC says so,” Councilman Jerry Johnson said. The city council discussed the ordinance during its work session on May 21. The city holds dual sessions the first and third Tuesdays of the month starting with a regular session and ending up with the work session. This ordinance will likely be voted on at the next regular session on June 4.

Google Street View Takes To The Water around the Orange Beach Area

April 26, 2019 - Alabama/Florida Gulf Coast - (OBA®) - The Coastal Alabama Business Chamber, through their connection with the Google Maps Street View imaging team, has arranged for Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, and Fort Morgan to be the second location in the United States to have the popular Google Street View virtual tour imaging technology brought onto inland waterways. On May 1st, Waterway View filming will take place, beginning at FloraBama and finishing in Fort Morgan.

Locally owned Island Fiber building network in Orange Beach

Councilman Jerry Johnson has said time and again he believes several companies will eventually be running fiber into Orange Beach neighborhoods to bring high-speed internet. And, the first one to do it may be the newest and homegrown. “We should have fiber in Burkhart within 60 to 90 days,” Island Fiber owner Mickey Franco said. “Our plan, once we got our franchise agreement, we had to get that to begin the permitting and the rest of the process. We’ve got a lot of that prepped and ready to go and we’ll be submitting permits for Burkhart the week of April 15.”

Gulf Shores looks to bring new fiber provider to city | GulfCoastNewsToday.com

The City of Gulf Shores is considering an agreement with a new internet provider to bring fiber to its residents. Economic Development Coordinator Blake Phelps presented the agreement to the council members. He said the agreement would be for 10 years and is consistent with other fiberoptic and telecommunications franchises currently in place.

WhiteSky latest to explore Orange Beach fiber options

February 11, 2019 – Orange Beach, AL (OBA®) – Orange Beach continues to look for options to bring fiber internet cable into its neighborhoods and is working with several companies to make that happen. The latest entry in the fiber sweepstakes is one called WhiteSky out of Tuscaloosa which is planning to start asking residents of specific neighborhoods if they are interested in having fiber in their homes. If enough agree to sign up then efforts can begin in earnest.
