January 29, 2013, Orange Beach, AL. (OBA) - The Gulf Coast Powerboat Association is proud to announce that there will be a 2013 Thunder on the Gulf Powerboat Race May 31–June 2 in Orange Beach, Alabama.
The GCPA is the proud recipient of a $250,000 BP grant to promote tourism along the Gulf Coast. The announcement was made at a check presentation at the Battle House in Mobile in December.
Since receiving the grant, the GCPA signed a contract with Super Boat International, out of Key West, Florida to produce the 2013 race. Super Boat International has led the way in competitive offshore powerboat racing since President John Carbonell held his first race in 1989. The 37-year offshore racing veteran is excited about the future of the only nationally and internationally recognized sanctioning body for the sport.
GCPA President Damon Collins said, “We are excited to get John and his outstanding SBI Team back to Orange Beach to produce this year’s race. We were disappointed that last year’s race had to be canceled, but are thrilled with the support that BP has given us to bring Thunder on the Gulf back to Orange Beach!”
