(OBA®) - Gulf Shores, AL. — On Friday, December 18th, the ‘Pinta’ a replica of one of Columbus’ famous Ships, opened for tours in Gulf Shores, AL. The ship is docked at Lulu’s Restaurant at Homeport Marina 200 E. 25th Avenue, until its departure early Monday morning on the 4th of January.
In 2005, the ‘Pinta’, a Portuguese Caravel, was launched in Brazil and was the first ship to sight land in the New World. Historians consider the caravel the Space Shuttle of the fifteenth century.
The Pinta travels the US waterways as a ‘sailing museum’ for the purpose of educating the public and school children on the ‘caravel’, a Portuguese ship used by Columbus and many early explorers to discover the world. Before him, the Old World and the New remained separate and distinct continents and ever since their fates have been bound together for better or for worse.
While in port, the general public is invited to visit the ship for a walk-aboard, self-guided tour. Admission charges are $6.50 for adults and $5 for students (5 - 17). Children 4 and under are Free. The ships are open every day from 10:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dates open to the public are the 18th-21st of December & 28th-3rd of January. No reservations necessary.
