A little damp but still rocking, thousands of festival goers have taken over the beach, the boardwalk and just about everywhere else along the beachfront in Gulf Shores.
When the gates to the 2016 Hangout Music Fest finally opened at about 3:30 p.m. Friday, following a lengthy rain delay, fans entered a Hangout experience unlike any other.
One thing about sand: It drains well. After a start that would have left many sites with deep water — or worse, deep festival mud — the Hangout fest site was merely damp. Glitches on the video screens at the major stages suggested the water hadn’t done them any favors, but otherwise the show went on. And how.
“What’s up Alabama?” Alabama Shakes frontwoman Brittany Howard said Friday evening at the 2016 Hangout Music Fest in Gulf Shores, Ala. “We have the home-court advantage tonight.”
It’s hard to know precisely what she meant by that, because it was true on a couple of levels. Sure, the Shakes were playing in their home state. But they also were returning to a stage they’d rocked hard in 2012, when they were still experiencing their first rush of fame. Back then, they brought headliner excitement to a midafternoon time slot; on Friday, they were playing right before the actual headliner, pop act The Weeknd.
Update at 3:22 p.m. CST: The Hangout Music Festival gates are now open, and music is expected to kick off at 3:30 p.m. The box office and shuttle services have also resumed normal operations.
Due to the rain delay, the performance times for most acts have changed. Alabama artist Jason Isbell will now take the stage at 7:30 p.m. CST while headliners The Weeknd and The Chainsmokers will perform at 10:45 p.m. CST.

GULF SHORES, Ala. (WPMI) — Rain or shine, thousands of music lovers are expected to flock to Hangout Fest in Gulf Shores this weekend. Organizers promise the show will go on despite the threat of wet weather.
The invasion has begun. “We expect some really good music from the big artist like the Weekend and expect some really good music from smaller bands too,” says Dana Swift as she waited in line. “Hope we get a good mix of it.”
Around 40 thousand music lovers are streaming into Gulf Shores for the Hangout Music Festival.

The population of Gulf Shores will easily triple this weekend as tens of thousands show up for Hangout Fest.
“I think this is bigger than July 4th, Labor Day, Memorial weekend, and spring break,” said Tracie Sweat.
But before the music can return, last minute preps for this year’s festival are underway. Nearly 90 acts will take the stage this year, and fans have their favorites.

There are rules. When a group of musicians know they’ve captured the spark of something truly special, when fans clamor for more, when lucrative new horizons beckon, there are rules to follow. Willie Sugarcapps is breaking most of them.
After the group came together more or less by chance in 2012, its self-titled debut gained regional attention and even a smattering of national notice, particularly in the Americana genre. Aside from the shimmering harmonies and distinctive songwriting, the group had a great story, that of a one-shot gig that gave birth to an accidental supergroup. And the rules dictated exactly what a group should do, in such a case: Drop everything, pile into a bus and hit the road hard. Build market share. Perfect your formula.
