GULF SHORES, Ala. — Robert Craft is at ease sitting in his office on a pretty January afternoon, two stories up, blinds open to reveal trees still green thanks to the subtropical climate of the Gulf Coast. But his thoughts, at least today, are on a weekend in May. Ten weekends in May, in fact. At the Jan. 12 City Council meeting, the panel unanimously approved an extension for the Hangout Music Festival, which will include the involvement of major music festival player Goldenvoice, for 10 years through the 2025 event.
What began as doing business with a few friends has turned into a variety of venues and a foundation initiated by Shaul Zislin. And although his businesses are growing, Zislin said it’s about much more than the profit. ”At the end of the day it’s not just about the dollar, it’s about creating something that is bigger,” he said.
November 25, 2014 – Gulf Shores, AL (GSA) – Gulf Shore sHigh School students got a hands-on, real-life food prep opportunity from the Hangout chef, Ira Gallon, this Thanksgiving. Students interested in the culinary/hospitality profession learned to prepare the dressing that was served at the Hangout’s Thanksgiving Day Buffet. Chef Gallon visited with the students on Friday, Nov. 21 to explain the recipe and the students prepared the dish on Monday.
This past weekend I was lucky to serve as one of the judges of the seventh annual Oyster Cook-Off and Craft Beer Weekend at the Hangout in Gulf Shores. A full weekend of food, beer, booze and music, the main event took place on Saturday.

City officials in Gulf Shores will vote on a possible extension for the Hangout Music Festival through 2020. The festival has already received approval for 2015, according to a report from AL.com, but city officials will hold a vote on Oct. 14 to decide if the three-day music festival will be extended for five more years.

The Oyster Cook-Off competition takes place on Saturday afternoon Nov. 8 when 50-plus chefs will compete in three categories for the best oyster, and patrons will have the chance to taste them all. The festivities begin on Friday, Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. with the debut of the Oyster Cook-Off Craft Beer Festival presented by AL.com. The public will have another opportunity to voice its opinion concerning the future of The Hangout Music Festival at Gulf Shores Pubic Beach during a public hearing on Sept. 22 at 4 p.m. at City Council Chambers at Gulf Shores City Hall.
GULF SHORES, AL — Mayor Robert Craft said when the city presents its plan for approval of a five-year permit extension for the Hangout Music Festival, organizers will have to abide by the city’s wishes. After a council session on Aug. 26 Craft was asked about the talks and he said staffers and council members were still working on the agreement and rules they want Hangout organizers to agree to if the festival is to continue.

Organizers with the Hangout Music Fest have announced that limited early bird tickets for the 2015 festival will go on sale Wednesday. Three-day tickets for the festival, set for May 15-17 on the public beach in Gulf Shores, Ala., will be sold for $189, down from the planned regular price of $249.

When the topic came up Mayor Robert Craft said the city needed more time to make sure the city and Hangout officials are satisfied with the terms of the agreement. The current agreement ends after next year’s festival and an extension would have world-renowned event in town through 2020.
GULF SHORES, AL — Shaul Zislin was the man of the hour at Monday’s Gulf Shores City Council work session. The entire meeting time was set aside to discuss Zislin’s request of the council to give him a five-year extension on the permit for his Hangout Music Festival. The current five-year permit runs through the 2015 event and Zislin wants it permitted through 2020.
ORANGE BEACH, Alabama – Upset with the handling of unorganized shuttle buses that had to be grounded at one point by the city during the Hangout Music Festival, Mayor Tony Kennon has requested an apology from the event’s founder.
June 11, 2014 – Gulf Shores, AL – The City of Gulf Shores is seeking input from citizens as it decides whether to issue a five-year permit to continue the Hangout Music Festival through 2020. There is one year, 2015, left on the current five-year permit. The City Council will discuss renewing the permit at its June 16 work session. Citizens can fill out a survey online about the Hangout. We will soon be considering the request by Hangout Music Festival officials for a five-year permit extension for the event. Over the next couple of weeks, we will be soliciting input from both residents and businesses to gather data with which to make an informed decision.

GULF SHORES, AL – A discussion on renewing the Hangout Music Festival’s permit for another five years through 2020 has been postponed to June 16. The Gulf Shores City Council was asked by Hangout officials to hear a petition for the renewal on May 12, but that request was postponed until the June 2 work session. City officials want the proposal to be presented and proposed in a work session to give citizens time to review and consider the plan.
